Four people were killed, including the gunman, and three others were injured in a shooting in suburban Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon.

The attack took place at the Greenwood Park Mall, about 15 miles south of Indianapolis.

The gunman was shot and killed by a Good Samaritan who witnessed the shooting, according to Greenwood Police Chief James Ison. The man used a gun to take down the attacker.

Ison said the suspect was armed with a rifle and had multiple magazines when he started opening fire.

The chief said, “Looks like he had a rifle with several ammunition magazines, entered the food court and started firing.”

Officials were called to Greenwood Park Mall shortly before 6 p.m., where shots were reportedly fired into the food court, Assistant Police Chief Chris Bailey said at a brief news conference.

Authorities are searching the mall for other victims, but Bailey said he believes the shooting was confined to the food court.

Officials also said a suspicious backpack was found in a bathroom near where the shooting took place. It is under investigation by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service.

In a statement, Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers said: “This tragedy touches the core of our community.” Myers begged any witnesses to the shooting to come forward.
